"Coach Jimmy checks our report cards and talks to our teacher - if we do bad we can’t play until our grades get better. My mom likes that."

Physical Education, Fitness and Healthy Eating Day
South Park Elementary School
February 16, 2011
Rising Stars of America brought three of its coaches and three physical education teachers from Crossroads School in Santa Monica to Baron's elementary school, South Park Elementary in South LA.
The Rising Stars coaches and PE teachers taught 800 students new and exciting games, drills and fitness skills. Each grade rotated through 5 different stations designed to improve their fitness level and experience the benefits of physical activity in their everyday lives.
The coaches, teachers and students also talked about healthy food choices and the benefits of those choices in their lives, including the need to drink plenty of water. At the end of the clinic each student received a healthy snack and water bottles.
Baron Davis, Principal Dennis Schaffer and Coach Daryl Roper developed this program to fill the physical training void due to school funding cutbacks. The goal was to provide students with working knowledge and resources to continue a physical regimen as part of their daily lives.
Rising Stars donated all the equipment, snacks and drinks to the South Park in keeping with its mission of bridging communities and encouraging kids to live a healthier and more physical life.
Principal Schaeffer, the teachers and especially the students considered the day huge success and can't wait for the next one.
